The entire bay - literally - was rimmed with oil refineries, tanker loading bays, incomprehensible tangles of pipework and steel, red-and-white striped chimneys.

The Frangipani or Plumeria (aka Pomelia), is a shrub with sweet-fragrant white blossoms, that crowded the coastal areas of Sicily. It made its early appearances in small bunches carried by the noblewomen of Palermo in the 18th century. The Botanic Garden of Palermo in Sicily, still retains its oldest specimens.

Carnation is the national flower of Sicily. Carnation Information: The flower grows on a herbaceous plant that has long leaves. The leaves are glaucous in nature and they may be green, greenish or blue in color. They range up to 15 cm in size. The flowers are 3 to 5 cm in size and they may grow in groups of 5 to form a cyme.

Plumeria: the flower of Sicily If you've been in Sicily at least once you must have noticed a white flower with a sweet-spicy scent inside Sicilian gardens or balcony. Well, that's the Plumeria, also known as Frangipani or Pomelia, as they call it around here.

A beautiful flower near Gibilmanna. SS113 along the coastline of Northern Sicily. This may be Asparagus horridus. Yellow aloe plant on la rocca di Cefalù. Poppies (Papaver rhoeas?) growing in the cracks of the defensive wall at Selinunte. The flowers couldn't save the ancient city from almost total destruction, though.

This year's tour is full (April 27 - May 4, 2022), but the April 26 - May 3, 2023 departure still has spaces available..
